From 8 Visionary Pioneers to 2,500+ Certified Professionals
What began as a modest gathering of eight dedicated Chartered Accountants in 1991 has grown exponentially over three and a half decades into one of the largest, most vibrant, and influential District Societies within ICAN worldwide.
The Mother District of North-Central Nigeria
At inception, the Abuja & District Society's geographic jurisdiction was vast, encompassing Abuja, Nasarawa, Lokoja, Minna, and Bida. As professional enrollment blossomed, the Society nurtured these zones until they attained district autonomy.
Birth of Independent State Districts
Through strategic leadership and administrative support, territories originally under Abuja's oversight grew into full-fledged independent District Societies:
• Nasarawa District Society (Nasarawa State)
• Lokoja District Society (Kogi State)
• Minna District Society (Niger State)
• Bida District Society (Niger State)
This decentralization strengthened ICAN's national footprint and deepened accounting practice across central Nigeria.
The 4 Thriving FCT Sub-Districts
To ensure grassroots member participation and localized professional development across the Federal Capital Territory, the Abuja & District Society proudly gave birth to four dynamic sub-districts:
Gwagwalada District
Serving academia, healthcare institutions, and public agencies in the Gwagwalada corridor.
Nyanya District
Anchoring professional development across the eastern commercial gateway of the FCT.
Lugbe District
Catering to expanding corporate hubs and airport-corridor public institutions.
Kubwa District
Mobilizing practitioners, public servants, and young accountants in the Bwari zone.
Strategic Proximity to the Federal Government
Situated in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, the Abuja & District Society occupies an unparalleled strategic position within ICAN. The Society serves as a vital institutional link between the Institute and key stakeholders across the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, and statutory regulatory bodies.
Through our proximity to the nation's seat of power, the Society actively champions ICAN's public interest mandate driving memoranda on national revenue reforms, public financial management (IPSAS), anti-corruption frameworks, and fiscal policy.
Institutional Anchor: Consistently playing host to the President of ICAN and Council members during the Annual Accountants' Conference and federal engagements.
Global Reach: Benchmarked Across Continents
Over more than three decades, the Abuja & District Society has distinguished itself as a pacesetter in member services, continuous education, and ethical stewardship.
Many signature programs, welfare structures, and administrative protocols first pioneered by the Abuja District have been commended, standardized, and adopted by District Societies across Nigeria and the international diaspora including chapters in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Cameroon.
Global Impact: Setting the pace for professional accounting education, Catch Them Young initiatives, and district governance standards worldwide.
